Size options

When a product has various size options available, it is important that the sizes are specified in a standard and consistent manner.

Having consistent sizes helps the customer find the right product variant when searching and removes duplication from the size filters.

Sizes must also conform to third party sales channel requirements and best practice. For example  Amazon and Google standards.

Multiple Size Values

Products may have their size expressed in multiple sizes to give more precision e.g. S (49-53cm) or L-XL (57-63cm). The correct way to represent these products is to strip out the size details and make sure this is presented either in the Size Guide tab of the product page or in the product description. This is typically done by including a size guide table/image (or both) which details all the possible sizes. The size option can then be simply described in the standard size terms e.g. S or L-XL.

Correct Values Incorrect Values
S S (49-53cm), S 49-53cm, Small 49 – 53 CM, Small – (45-53 CM)
L-XL L-XL (57-63cm), L-X 57-63cm, Large-XLarge (57cm-63cm), L – XL (57 – 63 cm)

One Size

It is generally bad practice to include a size option for a product when it can only ever be one value, however, “One Size” is an exception to this rule when it relates to an item that is only made in one size but the customer might not realise this, such as caps, buffs, etc. In these cases, specifying the size as “One Size” reinforces to the customer that the product comes in just one size.

Some “One Size” products have the minimum and maximum size range expressed to give more precision e.g. UNISIZE (54-61cm). The correct way to represent these products is to strip out the size details and make sure this is presented either in the product description or the Size Guide tab of the product page. The size option can then be simply described in the standard size term “One Size”.

  • if a product is made in multiple sizes, but only one is stocked, the size option should be set to the actual size of the stocked item, not “One Size”, even if the size is included in the product title. For example, if a shoe is only stocked in size 48, do not create the product with “size 48” included in the title and set the size option to “One Size” – instead, set the size option to “48”.

If there are multiple specific sizes, these should be separated by a forward slash (/) and no spaces.
