When customers search for products, they often want to specify the colour of product they are looking for. Suppliers publish the product colours in their product feeds, but often use branded or elaborated colours such as Pony or Sky Blue. If a product is primarily one colour but has detailing in different colours, e.g. Blue with white stripes, they might describe the colour as Blue/White without being clear that the main colour is Blue. Customers should not be offered all the variants of blue when they are filtering on colour. A customer looking for a blue jersey should be able to select the colour Blue from a short list of primary colours and be presented with all jerseys that are primarily blue, whether they be Sky Blue, Navy Blue, Petrol Blue, Blue with Yellow sleeves, etc…
To achieve this, a Tag Colour field is available for all products. This represents the primary colour of the product and is selected from a small number of major colours, which includes clear and multicolour (for when a product is truly multicoloured with no primary colour). These major colours are defined as the Fawkes Standard Colours.
When new products are loaded into the system, the supplier colour must be translated into the correct primary colour from the Fawkes Standard Colours. The product loader has a translation file that holds all the supplier colours and their equivalent Fawkes Standard Colour. If a supplier issues a product feed with a new colour, this must be added to the translation file along with its equivalent Fawkes Standard Colour. The Fawkes pre-Product Loader function (in the Tools and Utilities section of this website) can be used to scan a supplier feed for ‘new’ colours and help add these to the translation file so that the product loader knows what Tag Colour to set.

The following table lists all the Fawkes Standard Colours. Only these colours should be used in the Tag Colour field and all colours should be lower case with the initial letter capitalised.
